Technology

At Clear View technology is embedded into our academic curriculum in multiple ways. Technological skills are taught to students and those skills are then used to learn academic material. Our program stresses that students gain communication and information processing skills through the use of the most current technology available. We expect students to be confident users of many technological tools.

In addition, we strive to attain business and community partnerships. Through the voice and video fiber optic connection supplied by Cox Communications, students conduct research with scientists at San Diego State University and the University of California Medical Center. It is important that we have a means to stay current with new technologies and continue to incorporate technology into the curriculum, as well as keep teachers up to date through regular staff development opportunities.

Diversity

Clear View is committed to helping all students acquire the knowledge, attitudes, beliefs and skills to become collaborating members of an increasingly diverse and global society. As a result of our diverse population and the study of James Banks' work on the characteristics of the multicultural school, we will embrace our diversity and what it offers. Clear View Charter School is home to a diverse student population.

As of May 2001, this population includes 50.5% Hispanic, 26% Caucasian, 13.2% Asian, 8.2% Filipino, 1.6% African-American, 0.3% Pacific Islander, 0.2% American Indian/Alaskan. These ethnic groups speak languages including English, Spanish, Japanese, Korean and Tagalog. Due in part to our geographical location, Clear View's diversity already exceeds national trends.

In addition to helping all students become literate and effective citizens who can participate productively in the workforce, education in the 21st century must teach students to care about people in their communities and to take personal, social, and civic responsibility to create a more humane and just society (Banks, 1994).

Currently multicultural emphasis is seen in:

  • Language Arts, Social Studies, and the Fine Arts curriculum
  • School-wide assemblies featuring international visitors, multimedia presentations, storytellers, and dramas
  • Cultural celebrations

We are committed to establishing a multicultural program, which calls for ongoing program evaluation, and staff development. We recognize that it is important to stay current with societal trends and research in education. This will be supported through partnerships with groups such as San Diego State University and the High Performance Learning Community Consortium.

Current Language Program

Our society has truly become poly literate. We believe that a multi-literate person in the 21st century will have a distinct advantage over one who is not, both in the work force and in society in general. Research shows that learning multiple languages increases academic achievement. Additional data suggests that languages are more easily acquired in a child's early years.

Clear View is proud to have a primary Spanish-language program. The current program is taught in a majority of Spanish in kindergarten and progresses to a majority of English instruction in grade 3. The students then transition from the primary language cluster to all English instruction in the fourth grade.

Friday Assemblies and Families

A unique feature at Clear View is called "Families." In this program students are cross-age grouped (K-6) and headed by a teacher. These "families", which meet once a week, remain intact through the student's years at Clear View. The "Families" program promotes self-esteem, acceptance of others, conflict resolution, global awareness, and the value of helping others. The Clear View Code of Respect, Responsibility and Self-Control is explored and promoted.

We offer weekly, whole-school assemblies where we sing, listen to storytellers, share poetry, and enjoy multicultural performances by community musical, acting and singing groups. It is during our assemblies that we recognize and celebrate the many achievements made by our students and staff, and further define what the Clear View Code means at our school. Parents and visitors enjoy our assemblies; and this program fosters our sense of community joining together to learn and grow.
